Children's Picture Book Workshop
Assisi, Italy August 2010

Making a Children's Picture Book
August 06 - August 19
Arrive Friday, August 6, depart Thursday, August 19 — two weeks
This workshop is designed for anyone who is interested in illustrating their own or someone else's story. Seemingly simple, children's picture book illustrating and writing is anything but. Whether you have an idea for a picture book but are not sure where to start or you are a published author/illustrator looking for a creative environment to work in, this workshop offers a unique setting to learn about and work on children’s book art. Popular author and illustrator G. Brian Karas will review the basics, discuss technique and media, and help students shape their vision into a picture book for children. Students will work on a book dummy and finished illustrations in this two week course. Work with a story of your own or choose one of the public domain manuscripts provided. Students are asked to bring art supplies in their chosen media to work on one to three finished illustrations for their book dummy. Personal and group critiques will provide different points of view and an interactive discussion.

school visits
I LOVE visiting schools! If you are interested in having me visit your school here is some information that can help. If there is more you'd like to know please contact me.
The question that I am most often asked is "where do you get your ideas?" The answer is complex but can be answered simply -- from everything I experience in life. Everything an artist encounters and experiences becomes a part of their artwork in some way -- people we know, places we’ve been, bits of conversations... I attempt to help students understand this by relating stories and showing sources of inspiration behind the artwork I make. My presentation lasts about 45 minutes to one hour and includes slides, a drawing demonstration and time for questions and answers.
Please make sure the room I am presenting in can be darkened sufficiently for slide projection. I can speak to groups up to 120 students but my primary concern is that they are comfortable and can see and hear me clearly. I can give up to three presentations per day, in addition to time for signing books. If you are interested in ordering books please contact my publishers directly, or a bookseller of your choice. Below are books that I speak about in detail:
YOUNG ZEUS Karas (Scholastic)
THE VILLAGE GARAGE Karas (Henry Holt)
MUNCHA! MUNCHA! MUNCHA! Fleming (Simon & Schuster)
CINDER-ELLY Minters (Viking)
SLEEPLESS BEAUTY Minters (Viking)
PRINCESS FISHTAIL Minters (Viking)
HOME ON THE BAYOU Karas (Simon & Schuster)
ATLANTIC Karas (G.P. Putnam's & Sons)
ON EARTH Karas (G.P. Putnam's & Sons)
Please contact me to discuss honorarium and other details. Transportation and accommodations are to be provided by the host school. Honorarium and reimbursements are to be paid on day of presentation.
